Custom Icons in the maps

Question:

  • How do i add an icon in MazeMap?

Answer:

1. Receive icons in proper format

We need to receive the icons in vector format from the customer. Preferably .SVG, but .AI is also acceptable.

Converting .EPS to .SVG

If you only have the icons in .EPS format you could easily convert them to .SVG using an online converter like for example: https://convertio.co/eps-svg/

2. Archive the raw icon files to a proper location

Currently, there exists a folder in Jottacloud for custom customer icons. It's in the MazeMap Design group, under "IKONER" → "CUSTOMER SPECIFIC" → "<customer name>"

Make a new folder for the current customer and put the icons in there. Preferably make a new folder for the raw icons, such as "raw_icons".

3a. Generate proper sized icons

We "normalize" the sizing of the icons using a template in Adobe Illstrator or Sketch.

Using Adobe Illustrator:

  • Inside the Seafile folder, there should be a template file called "CUSTOMER_ICON_TEMPLATE.ai". Copy this file inside the customer folder.
  • Add as many artboards as there are icons, and put each raw icon inside the respective artboards. Remember to rename the artboards to reflect the icon name. Does not need to be the same, but it will determine the filenames that are exported when finished.
  • When icons are adjusted within the template artboard size, use the export function "Save a copy..." and choose "SVG" format. Check the "Use Artboards" checkbox.
  • Save the exported icons into a new folder, called "export". (Just makes it more clean)
  • The exported files might get very long filenames, prefixed with the main template filename. Just rename all the exported files to something more readable.

3b. (Optional) adjust icons for cartographic usage. Add white borders/backgrounds.

This step seems to be destined for omittance, as it is time-consuming, and only works if MazeMap manually edits each icon from the customer.

If customer will upload themselves in the future, then this step will probably not be done unless we advise the customer to do it.

4. Upload icons in the customer account in MazeMap ADMIN

5. Use icons in the map editor and publish
