3D Assets
All customers can upload place 3D assets in the their maps. However, only 20 assets will be published if 3D Premium is not included in your license.
This document will go through the steps of uploading and adding 3D assets.
1. 3D Assets
3D assets that can be individually placed on floors using the POI-Editor tool in Map Editor. The assets are divided into “Global assets” and “Customer assets”. The Global assets are available for all customers and include a set of very generic assets (desks, chairs, tables, etc). A customer can also upload own customer assets.
1.1 Uploading custom 3D assets
The 3D asset format needs to be .glb.
Avoid using textures and geometries with a high polycount since this will impact the size of the assets and hence impacts the loading time when viewing the maps. Map Editor supports assets up to 4.5MB but in general try to aim for no more than 1MB for an asset.
1.2 Viewing, searching and adding 3D assets
To view, search or add new assets go into the 3D asset tool under the client options;
In this part of the tool all assets will be shown, both Global Assets and the Customer Assets. On the top of the page there is search-bar with different sorting options;
To add a new asset, scroll to the specific asset category and press the green plus sign of the right corner. The will open a dialogue box where you can either drag-and-drop the .glb file or browse your computer to select a file. Make sure to name the asset in a way the makes it clear what the asset represent.
1.3 Scaling 3D assets
Scaling the assets are important to ensure that they match the scaling of the floor and it adds to the realism of the asset. However it is important to note that assets are in a sense a symbol or a representation of a real-life asset, so the goal should not be perfect scaled asset, but scaled correctly within reason.
The scaling options will be presented when uploading a new asset, and the asset will be contrasted with an example wall. When scaling there are several “Map Display options” and options for “3D assets size”. There are also options for different kind of rotation. How the asset will look in the maps is impacted by how these options are configured.
1.4 Use Compression
Our tool has Use Compression option, that is marked by default, and reduces the size of the asset.
It can be seen and adjusted when create or edit the asset in 3D Assets menu.
When scaling and naming is done, press the “Save Asset” button in the lower right corner. The asset will now visible in the asset category it was uploaded to and it ready for placement.
2. Placing 3D assets
There is two ways of placing a 3D assets. One way is creating a new Point-Of-Interest and choosing “Place 3D Asset” option in the placement menu. The other option is connecting a 3D asset to a specific POI-type. To place an asset go into the POI-tool for the campus and either chose “Create a new POI” or go into the POI-Types tool.
2.1 Create a new POI
Click the “Create POI” button, set a title and chose if it should be searchable and if the label should be shown. Choose “Place 3D Asset” option in the placement menu and add the asset you want to use in the choose asset box. You can also select “Grid of POIs” if you want to place more then one asset at a time,(desk, tables, etc);
When pressing the “Select 3D asset” the same view of Global Assets and Customer assets will appear in a new window. Simply select the asset and place it on the floor. A useful tip is that you can rotate or re-scale it when your are placing it. For rotating hold Shift while using the mouse wheel, for scaling hold Control while using the mouse wheel. Press “Create POI” to save lock the asset in place.
2.2 POI-Types
For placing asset using POI-Types go into the POI-Types tool, select the type and press the “Select 3D asset”. The same view showing the different asset categories will open in new window, press the “Select” button underneath the asset. All POIs that are tagged with the selected POI-type will now have the show the 3D asset.
3. 3D Maps Button
3D maps is not the default view. Please ask your Customer Support Manager to create a webapp configuration with 3D enabled.
4. Extrusion
There is also an option in the POI-tool to extrude individual POIs. This is really helpful for customising our 3D maps for our premium 3D maps client and gives us the opportunity to create 3D models without creating 3D assets, examples could be booths for conferences or custom inventory. To set an extrusion click the POI and click the “3D” icon;
When viewing the 3D option for the selected POIs press the “Add Extrusion” button and set the value for to the wanted base and height of the POI. Values can be adjusted using the slider or inputting the values directly. The added extrusion will be shown directly in the POI-tool;
